Our subject is the working building

Puremelodybrixal is an independent information website about historic theatre restoration. We write for theatre custodians, cultural clients, students and audiences who want to understand why conservation decisions are rarely as simple as repairing damage or recovering an original appearance.

Our central interest is the connection between stage machinery, decorative interiors and the performance room. A change in one can affect the others. We therefore follow a connected sequence: establish significance, examine condition, compare interventions and leave a useful record.

Evidence before a preferred image

We distinguish institutional histories and published frameworks from our own editorial interpretation. Named theatres are reference points for questions, not implied clients, partners or endorsements. A photograph illustrates a type of space or material; it should not be treated as a condition survey or proof of a treatment at a named venue.

Our guides draw attention to established bodies such as Historic England, ICOMOS, the Theatres Trust, the Institute of Conservation and the SPAB. Their guidance has its own scope and context. Readers should consult current original documents and the rules applying in their own jurisdiction.

Clear boundaries make better information

We do not provide inspections, engineering designs, legal advice, safety certification or consent decisions. General conservation writing cannot identify concealed defects or establish whether a mechanism is safe. Work affecting historic fabric, overhead assemblies or stage systems requires appropriately qualified, site-specific advice.

We avoid presenting reconstruction as certainty where evidence is incomplete. We also avoid treating age as the only measure of significance. Later work, community associations and the continuity of performance may matter alongside early fabric.

Corrections belong in the record

If you identify an error, send the page address, the passage concerned and a reliable source supporting the correction. Please distinguish a factual correction from a difference of interpretation. We welcome both, but they call for different editorial responses.

The conservation-note tool helps you prepare an enquiry without submitting anything through this website. You decide whether to copy, download or separately email the resulting text.
